We ventured out to Northbridge with mum on the weekend with the agenda to look for a nice decent chinese restaurant that has good yumcha. According to my colleagues, Northbridge has a couple of good chinese restaurant that do pretty amazing yumcha at a pretty amazing cheap price and since both John and I are yum cha fanatics, it would be silly not to go.
Northbridge is the Chinatown of Perth. Heaps of asian shops and restaurants about. Quite a cool nifty little suburb which is like 5 mins walk from the city - It's basically just over the other side of Perth Station.
I know where to go when I crave some hometown food!
We went into one of the Asian grocery shop which is tucked away in the nooks and crannies of some unknown lane. I was literally overjoyed when I saw that they have everything that I could possibly find in Singapore. Which is pretty amazing because I could pretty much cook most of my nonya food since i now know where to get the ingredients from! Example, things like prawn paste (belachan)etc is not an easy thing to find in Australia!
Gigantic Doraemon Lolly Pop - only in Asia!
There are plenty of chinese restaurants in Northbridge that caters Yum Cha so basically you are really not short of options. From what i know or been told, Dragon Chinese Restaurant is the best one there so it was a no brainer that we had to check that place out.
There was a long que when we got there and we had to take a number and wait for our turn. I was not impressed at the idea of waiting so i asked if it will be long which the man kindly said that it'll be very quick till we get to be seated. True enough, within 5 mins we were ushered to our table. Efficiency gets you customers!
Of course, efficiency alone is not enough. Service and food has to be good too. We immediately started ordering stuff from the dim sum trolley while the waitress swiftly placed bamboo trays after another on the table. The must-haves are of course, the steam prawn dumplings (har gow), bbq pork buns (char siew bao) and Deep fried prawn paste chicken wings (Har Chiong Gai) - They were divine! But I was not impressed with the siew mai (pork dumplings) - they tasted a litle vile to be honest. Normally siew mai has a mix of pork and prawn meat filling but they had it all pork and there were bones in it plus the skin was thick and overall just, rough. We were not so much a fan over that dish.
