I had a massive craving for home (Singaporean) food on thursday afternoon so I emailed John while at work, planting an idea in his head to go out to Willeton for dinner. It was not very hard to get John excited for some good ol' asian cuisine so obviously he said yes.
Taurus Hawker Food was recommended by one of John's asian colleague and he said that since I am always looking for a good Singaporean/Malaysian cuisine thats the place to go. There was another restaurant next to Taurus called Bamboo Authentic Singapore, which we've already tried last weekend but wasn't as good as Taurus. I mean, it's nice but compared to Taurus, I would say Taurus wins hands down. Our intention last weekend was to go to Taurus but because they were so extremely crowded, we went to Bamboo instead. And i didn't bring my camera hence no blogging about Bamboo.
Anyway back to Taurus, so since we did not get to eat at Taurus on the weekend, and given that so many people were raving about it plus I had this raging craving for home food, we just had to go.
We got there just after six and thankfully there wasn't much crowd yet. John ordered his old time favourite, Curry Laksa and I ordered Lor Mee and a plate of Loh Bak (Ngor Hiang is what we call back home in Singapore) to share. Lok Bak is basically a Five-Spice pork roll and is made up of marinated lean mince pork in five spice powder and rolled up in soy bean curd skin and deep fried. It is then served sliced up with a dipping sauce to go with it. It is super yummy.
As for Lor Mee, it is a chinese noodle dish serve in thick gravy sauce and thick flat yellow noodles. The gravy is very flavourful and normally accompanied with a hard boil egg. thinly slice meat and abit of mince garlic and vinegar. This dish is definitely one of the all time favourite hawker food in Singapore and I absolutely loved it.
Without saying, I also ordered glass of cendol. Cendol is a dessert drink and is very popular in SEA. Mainly in Malaysia and Singapore. Cendol (pronounced as Chen-dole) is made up of coconut milk, a worm-like jelly made from rice flour with green colouring, shaved ice and palm sugar. It also has red beans. This dessert is truly a quintessential part of cuisine of SEA and is commonly sold in hawker centres and food court. But if you're not a fan of coconut, like John is, then i guess you would not appreciate this dish. But like I said, it's worth a try and who knows you might love it.
Will I go back to Taurus for seconds and more? Oh absolutely!
