Last weekend we discovered another gem of a place. This time, we had Japanese cuisine. I'm actually quite proud of John for coming so far - When I first met John, he is a nightmare to dine with. Being a typical kiwi bloke who has never been out of a rut, eating with him is like.. boring. He only eats what he's familiar with (Roast, Spag Bol, steak etc you get the drift) and basically that's not a lot. He's never tried Asian cuisine, well he claimed he has, meaning chinese take-aways in NZ but LET ME TELL YOU, having tried them myself, they are CRAP! It's pure rubbish. I'm a food snob when it comes to Asian cuisine, i think it goes the same with any Asian-born person in a foreign country.
Lucky for him, I took him along to my gastronomy adventures and expose him to all sorts of cuisines. And also because I do cook asian as well, he has but no choice to experience them.
John has also become a chilli eating machine and could take the heat as well as I do! He sometimes even complained that I don't put enough spice in some of my dishes! If you know me, I take my heat really well so there you go.
I did well, didn't I? LOL!
So anyways, back to story. Yes, Japanese cuisine. We wanted to eat at Taurus again but due to being lunch hour on a weekend, it was impossible to get a seat. We didnt want to wait because we had a movie to catch soon so we went next door to Yuki.
My colleague Jess did briefly tell me that Yuki is quite good and much to my amusement, Jess did had the stuff to back her words up. It was, as said, pretty good.
The menu is like a transcript - there were so many options but we went for the bento boxes. I ordered the Unagi option and John has the Chicken Teriyaki. Bento box is like a set of meal where it's normally serve with your main meat item, with a couple side dishes such as sushi, spring rolls/ gyoza, salad, miso soup and steam rice.

John's chicken teriyaki bento with gyoza. It looked and tasted pretty good and the serving of chicken was quite generous.

My Unagi (Eel) bento box with spring roll. I love love Unagi! It's actually grilled eel fillet served glazed with teriyaki sauce. The meat is so tender, fresh and it's so yummy. I know Eel may sound a little terrifying for some of you but the actual food itself is not, pretty much like a fish fillet only much tender.
Close up of UnagiThe bento box was more than enough food for one person, especially when you add up all the food together. So we thought thats the end of it and were happily eating away. About 5 mins later, the lady came out with a serving of piping hot tempura assortments of vegetables and seafood with dipping sauce for one each! Then it really became ALOT of food. But they were so yummo I couldn't resist shoving some down my throat.
