[Restaurant review]: Bistro Guillaume

I promised I was going to blog about my birthday dinner and I am going to. I made the effort to take photos of the food, if not, subtly, just for you guys to drool over. I do apologies in advance the quality of the photos as they were all taken by the mighty iPhone 5. But as they say, its better than nothing.

I was very excited to be going to Bistro Guillaume for my birthday dinner. I love fine dining and love love love french cuisine. The only food in french cuisine that I don't eat are escargots and foie gras, for ethical reason, especially the latter. Apart from that, it's all go.

As we entered the restaurant, it feels as though we are leaving behind the usual Perth dining scene and stepping into a modern french provincial surroundings. The first thing I noticed was the colour scheme of the place which was simply gorgeous, and in my favourite colour too! Green tones, classy elegant cream hues with black lines and trimmings. The french architectural lines throughout the decor definitely gave that french atmosphere. The seating arrangement consists of large table booths as well as modern table settings, and they also have outdoor seating that overlook the hotel pool, which could be splendid during warmer weather.

To complete the french experience, the wait staff were french themselves. Our waitress was french and had a very thick accent and I must admit at times I couldn't understand her even though she was speaking English. The service provided was excellent and made our experience even better.

The selection of food on menu were made up of classic french dishes. I promised myself that if there were duck confit on the menu, that would immediately decide what I was going to have that night. And being a good french restaurant that it was, they did have it.

Chacuterie plate

I ordered the Chacuterie plate for entree, could not get any more french than that, and Leg of Duck Confit with peas, shallots and speck for main. The husband had French Onion Soup for entree and Ranger Valley Sirloin, crispy kipfler potatoes, watercress salad and Bearnaise sauce for his main.

I went out of my comfort zone and ordered something I typically would not order. I was curious to give pate and terrain a go. I heard from a friend that a properly done pate and terrain taste heavenly and the french does great pates/ terrain. So being in a french restaurant, I had to give these a go. The thought of them being made of liver just irks me. I am not a fan of offal so I immediately put them off before even trying them. Well, what do you know, this decision I made did not disappoint! I am in love! They were so delicious, especially the pate! It was creamy, smooth and melts in your mouth. I can't believe I have been living under a rock all these time.

The husband was not so fuss about his french onion soup. I had a taste and I actually really like it. I love onions so that would perhaps played a big part of it.

The infamous Parish Mash

And the mains, well, what is there to fault?! Best duck confit ever. It was sensational! Meat falling off bone and melts in your mouth. It was very well paired with peas mixture and the broth that came with just blended and tied everything together - it was amazing. We ordered a Parish mash as a side and I ate my duck confit together with the mash and wow, unbelievable! The mash itself was super yummy too! No wonder it is so popular. The only thing I have to fault on this dish was, simply not enough! I was a happy camper.

The husband said his main was gorgeous. I didn't taste his dish as I was so blown away with mine! lol! We were pretty stuffed by the end of the mains but me being me, I just can't leave the restaurant without at least ordering a dessert! So in the end, we ordered their Profiteroles to share, although I ate most of it!

When there's profiteroles, french bean vanilla ice cream and warm chocolate sauce, everything is right. The world becomes a better place. No I'm serious. I was in heavens. It was so good that I ate everything, despite already bursting at the seams. I'm a shocker but it was so goood and it didn't matter that I was waddling out of the restaurant unglamorously because I was so stuffed!

I would love to be back again some day to try out the rest of the other dishes. But for now, I am very satisfied with our little gastronomic date at Bistro Gaulliaume.
